Inspiration for this partition wall/installation was drawn from the “Char”, a landform emerging as islands within the river channel or as attached land to the riverbanks due to the dynamics of erosion and accretion, in Bengal, a landscape of rivers.

Maintaining the ideal of sustaining legacy while bridging gaps between the new and old, the installation is a harmonious composition consisting of traditional terracotta roofing tiles and the modern concrete block.

These materials have not been used in the conventional style, but have rather, been crafted into customized modules which are then mounted on a mild steel framework in a pattern that is derived from the Char formation – mounds of land which are irregular in shape due to the meandering river’s course.

A terracotta tile was cut in two ways – laterally and cross-sectionally, to achieve five distinct pieces. These are then arranged in alternating rows, with several permutations, among concrete blocks which are also custom moulded. The pattern so achieved depicts the amoeboid island chars (tiles) amidst the homogenous waters (concrete blocks).
